Tagetes erecta, also called Aztec marigold, is a species of the genus Tagetes native to Mexico and Central America. Traditionally, the Aztecs gathered and cultivated these wild plants for therapeutic, ceremonial, and decorative purposes. In regions of Mexico, Tagetes erecta was a primary herb in purification rituals and ceremonies. The essential oil is often used in personal-care products because of its strong, sweet apple fragrance. It is also used internally to support digestion and externally to support healthy skin.
